Cait Sith is a weird character, both in general and in-universe. Here I'll be putting some pieces of canon that are neat to know, as well as the headcanons I'll most likely be operating under in threads. If these headcanons don't match up with yours, I'm more than happy to adjust myself and my playing to better match!

They might be disproven by the time he shows up in Remake anyway, so it's everyone for themselves 'til then.

The Canon
  • Cait Sith is a robotic toy cat controlled by Reeve Tuesti by what appears to be a purely or mostly mental link. Reeve is able to make Cait move and speak, can see/hear what Cait hears, and possibly feel what Cait feels as well. (Touch, pain, etc)
  • In Before Crisis, Cait has a separate remote that would allow others to direct his movements. Also in Before Crisis, Cait is shown to be able to speak and operate without Reeve or the player's direct input.
  • It is unclear how his riding Mog works, though it's implied to be a rudimentary AI who takes orders directly from Cait.

The Headcanon
  • Cait Sith has a full AI and full functionality separate from Reeve and does not need to be manually controlled 24/7. This didn't happen overnight or with the very first prototype, it's something that built up with experience and use, especially during his time with AVALANCHE.
  • Cait's "fortune telling" is 90% running probability calculations and 10% ???????????
  • The Cait Sith who died at the Temple of the Ancients is not the Cait Sith who re-joined them a little later. He has a similar body and re-uploaded memories, but different personal experiences, and thus considers himself a separate entity. This is the same every time a Cait body is destroyed.
  • Cait Sith has/had at least twenty backup bodies. (This is 100% a FFXI joke, don't think about it too hard.)
  • If asked, this Cait will refer to himself as #5.
  • Reeve can connect and listen in/watch what Cait is hearing/seeing without taking direct control. Cait is aware of when Reeve is watching.
  • Reeve can take control of Cait at any time. Cait cannot override Reeve's control and kick him out.
  • If asked where Reeve ends and Cait begins, he isn't entirely sure. He just knows they're the same but also different.
